Pink Asparagus from Mezzago

The King of Brianza
And here we are again this year—it’s the season for the delicious
Pink Asparagus of Mezzago
!
Mezzago Pink Asparagus is produced by growing the “Eros” variety, which was developed atthe Experimental Institute for Horticulture in Montanaso Lombardo.
The soil conditions (clayey and rich in iron minerals) and climate of the Mezzaghese confer unique aesthetic and organoleptic characteristics, making this product a Brianza excellence .
Exposing the tip to sunlight for a few hours—from sunrise until harvest in the early morning—completes the process that produces its unmistakable pink color.
The tradition of asparagus cultivation in this area dates back to the beginning of the last century, reaching its peak in the 1930s.
After decades marked by a decline in production, in 2000 the
Mezzago Asparagus Growers’ Agricultural Cooperative (CAAM)
was founded in 2000 with the aim of reviving and promoting this unique product, thanks in part to the specialization of local farms led by young entrepreneurs.
On April 22, the traditional “
Pink Asparagus Festival
,” now in its 63rd year, will take place.
